摘要:作为我国翻译的一个新兴领域,电影字幕翻译以迅雷不及掩耳之势发展起来。这一翻译领域的出现,使得大量外国优秀的影视作品涌入我国,成为了人们了解国外语言文化的绝佳途径。较之于文学作品,电影更贴近生活,电影字幕翻译过程中涉及到大量文化元素的处理问题。本文讨论了电影字幕翻译的发展以及其中涉及到的文化因素,通过讨论电影《盗梦空间》的字幕翻译,对翻译活动中处理文化因素常用的两种翻译策略——归化和异化进行了探究和分析。本文着力对电影字幕翻译过程中归化和异化两种翻译策略的选择问题进行探究,指出二者不是对立关系,而是相辅相成的,翻译策略的选择需考虑众多因素,二者也并无优劣之分。通过结合电影《盗梦空间》的字幕翻译,可以看出在同一部翻译作品里同时运用归化和异化两种翻译策略是可能的,然而基于文化差异、受众等诸多因素,译者往往需要选择最合适的翻译策略,旨在使译文受众与原文受众对该电影产生相同的情感体验。 关键词:电影字幕翻译 归化 异化 文化因素 盗梦空间
Abstract:As a new area in translation field, film subtitle translation develops sharply. The appearance of this new area makes it possible for the introduction of numerous excellent foreign films in China, through which people start to know the foreign languages as well as their cultures in a better way. Film is more closely related to people’s daily life compared to literary works, and film subtitle translation involves a lot of cultural elements that need to be dealt with properly. In this thesis, this paper introduces the development of film subtitle translation and the involved cultural elements, and also gives detailed analysis of two common translation strategies---domestication and foreignization in dealing with cultural elements through a case study of the film Inception’s subtitle. This thesis focused on the matter of choice between domestication and foreignization strategies in film subtitle translation, arguing that they are not contradictory to each other, nor are they competing with each other. Instead, they are complementary, and the choice of these two strategies should take a lot of factors into consideration. Through the analysis of film Inception’s subtitle, the possibility of combining domestication and foreigniation strategies is further proved. However, since the diversity in the source culture and the target culture as well as the difference in audiences’ comprehension ability, translators should use the most appropriate strategy in dealing with translating activity, making sure of the same enjoyment among the target audiences as well as the source audiences. As an essential part of people’s recreational activity, film generates a profound influence on many aspects such as arts, literature, multi-cultural communication etc. Film industry has influenced generation after generation of people in the long stream of history. As an emerging branch of multimedia translation, film translation not only attracts and increasing number of scholars’ attention but also brings convenience to the audiences who want to enjoy the film around the world. Film translation has undergone a relatively short term of history. As early as 1970s, it was Katharina Reiss who first noticed multimedia translation. After 1990s, the research of multimedia translation has been flourishing. A large number of essays and books also have been published in this field since than. While in China, there are five stages running through the film translation. In the development of translation, translators used to put the linguistic elements into account in translation studies. In the year of 1990s, Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere came up with a new concept “culture turn”, after which the study of translation with culture began. Language and culture related tightly with each other. As film is one of the important means of culture exchange, the culture elements must be taken onto account while translating the subtitle. In order to deal with the cultural information in film subtitle translation, the translator should consider both of the two basic strategies---domestication and foreignization. Over a long period of time, scholars have discussed about which strategy is best in subtitle translation. However, it is probably possible to combine them while dealing with the film subtitle translation. In some circumstances, the translators need to use the best strategy when dealing with different expressions referring to cultural images. This thesis will focus on the possibility of the combination of domestication and foreignization strategies thorough the analysis of the film subtitle translation of the film Inception, and meanwhile, to provide methods of choice between these two strategies concerning cultural elements. Following is a brief introduction of the main contents. At first, the author briefly introduced film translation, which includes dubbing and subtitles translation, and then talked about the research of film translation at home and abroad. Secondly, the author gave the main body, which contains four parts in total. The first part discussed film subtitle translation, including its definition, classification from different perspectives and its constraints. The second part mainly talked about cultural elements in film subtitle translation. In the third part, the author introduced two translation strategies: domestication and foreignization, the debate over the choice between these two strategies, the method of choice between them and the possibility of combining them. The forth part combined these two strategies with the film Inception's subtitle. At last the author made a conclusion of the whole thesis. |
