Abstract:Toni Morrison is the only black woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She takes on the double missions of respecting the history and being innovated in art. When writing the book, Beloved, she tries her best to restrain her ulcerous hatred to this period of the history as a black woman, making the narrative mediation to a minimum, so that the performances and lines of the characters, scenes and events itself can show the truest psychological reality, social reality and historical reality. Through the research for the features of the characters in Beloved, the essay reveals that when pursuing the freedom and seeking for the relief, the black, Africa-Americans, are not only oppressed by their white slave-owners, but also suffering from their self-torment, because they lives as slaves for such a long period that they almost accept that humble kind of life and identity in their heart, on the other hand, they tends to seek only for the freedom of the body, but ignore that the real freedom is the liberation of the mind. The author focuses on the distortions of the characters in Beloved and the symbolic significance of Beloved, demonstrates the system of slavery as well as the fate and the miserable life of the Negro, and objectively expresses the hatred to the slavery and the sympathy on the lives of slaves .
Key words: Toni Morrison, Beloved, Africa-Americans, slavery

By analysing the characters in Beloved, the psychological fear and the warped minds of the slaves living under the rule of the slavery are showed thoroughly to the readers. In the South carrying out the slavery, the black slaves have been classified as animals species. to seek for the liberation of the bodies, they chose to "escape", in order to seek for spiritual liberation, Baby Suggs chose to die in bed; Hall went into mad; Sethe tried to use the compensation to a ghost to ease the guilty of killing her daughter; after being successfully lured by Beloved Paul D attempted to persuade Sethe to have a baby with him to prove his identity of being a man. As a black woman, Toni·Morrison can remain a calm and objective attitude, when describing the tragic history of the black, which is commendable. It not only warns the future generations to look at the history with a right attitude, but also make an important contribution to the development of the black literature.
