Abstract: Literal translation and free translation are the two fundamental methods. They both make great contribution to the poetry translation. This thesis takes Shengshengman as an example to show the merits and demerits of the two methods in the poetry translation. Literal translation keeps the original form of Shengshengman, but it is difficult to understand. Free translation focuses on expressing the original content, which makes the original meaning not only smooth and fluent, but also acceptable and conformable to the foreigners. As a result, literal translation is more conformable to Chinese culture, while free translation is more acceptable to English culture.
