Abstract:Sula is the second work of Toni Morrison, who is an American black woman writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. It mainly described a black girl Sula, who lived in a painful and absurd world and oppressed by the racial discrimination, class oppression and gender discrimination, however, she tried her best to fight against the world and pursued herself. Meanwhile, it also discussed human being’s survival significance. In this novel, existentialism had a great influence on it. This paper attempts to make an analysis on Sula from the perspective of existentialism — Sula’s absurd and painful world, Sula’s self pursuit and Sula’s failure of free choice. This research will help readers have a better understanding of Sula and other female images of Toni Morrison’s works.
