Abstract:This study aims to make a study of the translation of DVCs in English fiction with special reference to the Great Gatsby. In the paper the author has employed exemplification and statistics together with induction and deduction to explore what kinds of translation skills and strategies are used in English DVCs translation in the novel, attempting to explain why those techniques are used from the viewpoint of linguistic theory based on the target text. By observation we have found that in different chapters the distribution of DVCs in the source text varies. As for the translation skills, our findings show that at least seven translation skills are applied in the translation of DVCs into Chinese. Owing to the complexity of language, sometimes two translation skills or more are used in translating the same DVC. The occurrence of the phenomenon is due to the function of translation equivalent. Therefore, translators usually make use of various translation skills in DVC translation so as to let the target text preserve the same meaning in the source text.
