Abstract:Taboo is a universal cultural phenomenon among nations, which norms people’s language, behaviors and social communication. Based on previous research, firstly this thesis introduces taboo, pragmatics and research status at home and abroad. Secondly, pragmatic differences are analyzed between English and Chinese taboo from four aspects, including color, names, appellation and personal privacy. Finally, it discusses three reasons for pragmatic differences between English and Chinese taboo from the aspects of history, cultures and religion. By means of examples, literature review and comparative analysis, the thesis attempts to study pragmatic differences between English and Chinese taboo, in order to help people further understand English and Chinese taboo and improve people’s ability of intercultural communication.
