Abstract:Hemingway is a writer brimming with talents. With his unique style of writing techniques and that of art, coupled with his tough guy image shaped by him in his works and his famous iceberg theory, Hemingway has a pivotal position in the history of both American literature and world literature.Therefore,this paper compares the translation of Wu Lao and the translation of Sun Hongji and analyzes them as a case study of Hemingway's famous work The Old Man and the Sea based on the theoretical basis of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance",to find out mistakes and deficiencies,relevant to linguistics and cultures such as repetition,semantic collocations,decontextualization,deviation out of rhetorical device because of the cultural differences between Chinese and English;the differences of the syntax and the chapter developments. In this process,it also can help us understand the translation style of Hemingway's works to provide some practical references for those who are interested in him and in literature translation.
