Abstract
As one of the contemporary Chinese literature bestsellers, Wolf Totem scores a great yet rare success overseas. And it has attracted quite a number of academics to research on both its English version and Chinese original. To get a closer look on the success of the novel, this article will mainly focus on the translation method of its English version “Wolf Totem”, translated by Howard Goldblatt. The study centers round a detailed analysis of examples and the possible factors influencing translations like reader response, strategies adopted by the translator and the publisher. The present study aims to explore and examine Goldblatt’s consideration in translating the Chinese original of Lang Tuteng as a novel into English and to make better sense of the translation. The paper culminates in the author’s reflections on doing the present study and on some difficulties in translating Chinese novels into English.
