Abstract
It is unavoidable for scholars at home and abroad to answer the question whether translation is a subject of science or an art, especially in the field of literary translation study. The paper analyzes the translation principles of beauty in three aspects proposed by Xu Yuanzhong when translation is considered as an art. Moreover, a brief analysis of every aspect of beauty is presented in the paper, along with a case study of the Story of the Stone, a masterpiece of David Hawks.
The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces the status the Story of the Stone holds in the history of literary translation and the significances of the paper. The second chapter introduces some present studies of David Hawks’ the Story of the Stone from Various Perspectives. The third chapter makes a detailed description and explanation of beauty in three aspects theory proposed by Xu Yuanzhong. The fourth chapter contains a case study of the Story of the Stone to manifest the beauty in three aspects theory used in practice. In the end, conclusions are drawn from discussion and analysis, which conclude the basic law of literary translation.
