Abstract
Guided by Skopos theory, the thesis, with culture-loaded words in The Family as the object of the study, makes an analysis of the translation strategies of some culture-loaded words with typical features to explore the Skopos and the effect of two main strategies (foreignization and domestication) the translator used in The Family, in order to make further knowledge of the translation strategies of culture-loaded words and the contribution to culture spreading and communication.
This thesis first gives an illustration of the significance of this research from both theoretical and realistic angles. The second chapter is literature review on the previous studies on the Skopos theory, culture-loaded words and The Family. Then there follows a detailed introduction of Skopos theory and culture-loaded words with the focus on the five culture factors put forward by Nida. After that, the thesis makes an analysis of the translation strategies of typical culture-loaded words in The Family and draws the conclusion.
Through the study, a conclusion is drawn: the choice of certain translation strategy is determined by the intention of the translation action, and the combination of foreignization and domestication helps translators turn out better work. In addition, the thesis provides guiding significance for translation practice and gets a realization that the translation of culture-loaded words contributes to the promotion of culture exchanges between different nations.
