Abstract
Nowadays, the media enjoys a great popularity among people’s public life and we often feel puzzled about all kinds of news. So news headlines are often regarded as the eyes of news reports to catch the meaning of a passage. In other words, the news headlines should refine and summarize the news content. Domestication and foreignization are two aspects of a contradictory unity, and the use of domestication and foreignization has always been the focus of discussion in the translation circle. In translating English news, we often encounter expressions with typical cultural characteristics, which includes the question of how to apply domestication and foreignization.
This paper analyzes the features of English news headlines translation from two perspectives of domestication and foreignization, and a large number of examples are extracted from the economist and times magazine. This thesis combines definitions with instances, and analyzes the usage of it, finally draw conclusions. In the end, the paper will help readers choose the most suitable translation strategies under an era of information explosion.
