ABSTRACT
With the acceleration of the process of reform and opening up and the pace of globalization, the connection between China and the world has become more frequent in various fields of economy, culture and politics. Therefore, English has constantly come into our daily lives and played an important role in our study. Translation is considered as a bridge of communication between cultures. The words and phrases with Chinese characteristics contain five thousand years of ancient Chinese culture and reflect the change of Chinese culture with the changing of times. They are national and unique. They express the Chinese people’s thinking ways. In western culture, you can not find the equivalent words and phrases totally. Because of cultural differences and the different historical backgrounds, there exist many difficulties in the translation of the words and phrases with Chinese characteristics. For example, sometimes it is difficult to find the English equivalents. This paper studies the definition, features and classification of the words and phrases with Chinese characteristics, and then points out some difficulties in the Chinese-English translation. Most importantly, the author presents some appropriate ways of dealing with the cultural information in translation, such as literal translation, free translation, omission, substitution, and so on. Through the research on this topic, we can learn more differences between Chinese and Western cultures, get a deeper understanding of the words and phrases with Chinese characteristics, and know how to process the cultural information in the translation. Thus we can remove the barriers in cultural communication and develop our adaptability.
