Abstract
Since entering the 21st century, China has achieved remarkable achievement in politics, economy, culture, etc.. Moreover, China has played a vital role in the world stage with its powerful diplomatic activities. Chinese-Characteristic Words are those expressions with Chinese own characteristics and its profound culture, which concerning many fields. Owing to the language and cultural differences between China and the West, the proper translation of Chinese-Characteristic Words can not only make the diplomatic activities run fluently, but help to build a positive image and raise China’s international status.
The present thesis studies the C-E translation of Chinese-Characteristic Words in diplomacy from the perspective of Skopos. It introduces the study of Skopos at home and abroad as well as the study on Chinese-Characteristic Words, then probes some factors that influence the translation. What’s more, with examples analyzed cited from interpretation for Premier Li Keqiang on some press conferences in 2014 and the interpretation of some important national leaders’ speeches in diplomatic occasions in recent three years, translation principles are put forward and the approaches of literal translation, free translation, literal translation plus annotation, and transliteration are recommended under the guidance of Skopos. This thesis is written with the hope to provide a useful perspective for the translation of Chinese-Characteristic Words in diplomatic activities.
