Abstract:In cross-cultural communication, language is one of the most important carriers through which cultural characteristics, to a large extent, is represented, especially through its vocabulary, such as the Work Report of the Government in which there are lots of words bearing Chinese characteristics, which may highly confuse target readers who have little or have no knowledge about Chinese culture. Thus, translators must take target readers’ cognitive capability into consideration, offering adequate background information concerned to explain the connotative meanings clearly so as to fully show Chinese characteristics of modernization and social development. This thesis studies the English version of the 2017’s Work Report of the Government under the guidance of Adaptation Theory in which the translation methods and strategies applied in C-E translation of characteristic words are fully explored so as to get familiar with the skills used in translating Chinese characteristic words and pave way for the future translating work, hoping this thesis can be of help to those people who are determined to work as a full-time translating worker.
