Abstract: Language is a cultural phenomenon. The study of love metaphor in Chinese and English has deepened the constant international communication in the global world. The definition of metaphor is essential in the process of human’s understanding and reforming the world. The origin and development of proverbs are first discussed. Turning next to consider common characteristics of love in English proverbs. Then the differences of love metaphor between English and Chinese proverbs are described. Finally, the comparative analysis of metaphor of love proverbs between English and Chinese are covered.

摘要;语言是一种文化现象。在研究中,全球的国际交流不断加深了中英文的爱情隐喻的研究。隐喻被定义为至关重要的在人类的认识和改造世界的过程。首先讨论谚语的起源和发展,接着我了解英语谚语的共同之处,然后讲述中英爱情谚语的区别,最后,介绍中英谚语中爱情谚语的对比分析。

  English and Chinese share many metaphors in love metaphor. The similarities claim that there are cognitive universals as well as linguistic universals since the life experience are common among human beings. Proverb is a statement of truth that has currency among the people. They are short, pithy but profound truth. Proverbs are important parts of language and culture of society. They can be used in various situations to make the language more meaningful. The traditional metaphor is a kind of words on rhetoric way. It is not enough that the metaphors just rhetorical means or language phenomenon. The thesis researches on love as the subject. Love metaphor in different cultural background and social custom has a certain cultural differences with national cultural characteristics. Through the comparison between English and Chinese proverbs, the different ethnic cultures in its own translation will be understood. As a result, the cultural connotation of proverbs and the culture of the nationality should be understood.
