Abstract：The author uses lots of symbols in this novel. Through analyzing the symbolic meanings of the characters of Susie and Mr. Harvey and the symbolic meanings of the scenes of pharos and icicle, readers can see that these symbols not only enhance the tragic atmosphere, but also describe the personal character and inner world vividly. The purpose of this paper is to make people understand the theme of this novel easily through analyzing of symbols.
And in The Lovely Bones, the author uses many symbols. On the one hand, the use of symbols will contribute to constructing this novel and controlling the speed of it. On the other hand, symbols can contribute to creating the consistency in description and making the plot of this novel richer. In addition, symbols can better reveal people’s feeling, emotion, passion and unconscious spirit action which hide under the superficial phenomenon. Meanwhile, by means of studying the meanings of symbols in this paper, it may help some people to learn and use the symbols successfully in their works in the future.

Alice Sebold graduates from the University of California. She is an American author. She writes book reviews for the Chicago Tribune and opens up a special column in the New York Times. The Lovely Bones is her maiden work which is a long literary piece. But it is not her first work, because her first work is Lucky. In total, she has three works. Lucky, The Lovely Bones and The Almost Moon. New York Times thinks that her works are very rich in humor, wisdom, hope and charm. The Lovely Bones is written by her in 2002 and this novel is a big success for American press at that time. The circulations of this novel have reached more than 5 million copies. It is one of the bestsellers which are chosen as the testimonial by American Reading Association. It is chosen as the Novel of the Year Award in America. Alice Sebold seems to be a fortuitous star of the literary world in America. Lots of American media speak highly of her, because she is the most potential author.
The Lovely Bones is the story of a family devastated by a gruesome murder. It describes a 14-year-old girl who is raped, murdered and dismembered by her neighbor on her way home. Hu Yunhuan, a foreign literature researcher, thinks that the interpretations of the family emotional problems are more comprehensive and profound in The Lovely Bones. In the end of this novel, Alice Sebold compares a family to the skeleton of a person, even if one bone has broken, missed, one day the skeleton will be complete.
