Abstract:With the rapid development of globalization and after entering the WTO, English has become a major subject in schools at all levels in China and the emphasis in English learning has shifted from grammar and writing to communication -- oral English. In order to improve students’ ability for cross-culture communication, many techniques and methods have been tried in the past 30 years. In recent years, with the development of science and technology, video has become an increasingly popular method in English teaching, because English original films, with their interesting and attractive stories, authentic context, and rich knowledge about the culture of English-spoken countries, can be a useful tool for students in English learning. Moreover, by watching English original films, students can enrich vocabulary, enhance listening skills, and further understand culture backgrounds, thus enormously advancing their oral English and the ability of communication. To reach this goal, they can use some useful methods, such as choosing a suitable film, making good preparation before watching, following some helpful methods or instructions given by teachers while watching and designing some activities after watching. From all these advantages and functions, it is obvious that English original films, which are more beneficial than traditional teaching methods, can help students improve their oral English when used properly.
