Abstract:This article analyses different modes of thinking in China and English-speaking countries and features English long sentences. It will then discusses five traditional ways of English- Chinese translation of long sentences, namely, Sequential Translation,Reversed Translation, Cutting Apart, Recasting, Synthetic Translation and Inserted Translation using a large number of examples. By this I aim to help English learners with their study of translation of English long sentences.

Translation is an activity of using one language to convey the meaning of another language accurately and squarely. Translation is also the ability of converting the linguistic culture of one language into another. It is a cross-cultural activity. Undoubtedly, the direct obstacles of cross-cultural activity are the differences between languages. Moreover, the differences, mainly, are caused by the different modes of thinking of people. Long sentences reflect the thinking modes and the thinking processes of people. It is a track of the modes of people’s thinking. Therefore, we can explore a new way of tackling the problem of the translation of long sentences in English through the prospective of the modes of thinking of different people.
