Abstract: This study aims to investigate Hester, the heroine’s revolted thinking and behavior in The Scarlet Letter and to show her unique personality, that is, her bravery when facing plight, and her persistent love and lofty morality which is admired by others. By using her seemingly weak power to evoke the mightiest revolt, Hester raises the position of women to a considerable level in the patriarchal society. Hawthorn endowed Hester with the most perfect character, which shows as an active and aspirant figure and an awakened new woman with feminine self-consciousness. Analyzing the feminism theme in the novel will put a direct insight into Hester, helping readers to understand the darkest and most ugly aspect of the society at that time.

摘要：该课题旨在研究《红字》中女主人公海斯特的反抗思想与行为，展现她独特的个性，即对困境的勇敢、发自内心而又执着的爱、以及受人追捧的道德，她用最柔弱的力量唤起了最强大的反抗，将妇女在当时父系社会中提升到一个可观的高度。海斯特是一个积极向上的人物，一个觉醒的新女性，这一切都靠霍桑给予了她最完美的角色。分析小说中的女权主义这一主题对海斯特的形象会有直观的深入，帮助读者勾勒出当时社会黑暗丑陋的画面。
