Abstract: Amy Tan is a distinguished Chinese American writer, who made a great contribution to Chinese American literature. Tan’s first novel The Joy Luck Club is considered to be her most successful work, which has gained great popularity among popular readership as well as critics. From across-cultural perspective, the author contrastively analyzes the conflicts experienced by Chinese mothers and American daughters in The Joy Luck Club. The conflicts between them are just conflicts between two cultures. The focus of this thesis lays on the studies of first generation immigrants and their off springs’ attitude toward Chinese tradition as well as the solutions they employ to resolve the problems.
The thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter offers a brief introduction to Amy Tan and her works, as well as a research project based on a detailed analysis of its existing studies. The second chapter is the concentration of the whole paper, the writer analyzes the conflicts in The Joy Luck Club in detail. And the thorough analysis is conducted from two aspects: representation and cause. In The Joy Luck Club, conflicts represented from mother-daughter relationship, are caused not only by the generation gap but by different characteristics of Western and Chinese traditional cultures. After contrastively analyzing the conflicts between these two cultures, we may gain access to many different cultural aspects of America and also get a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. This process enhances our cross-cultural communication.

摘要: 作为一名杰出的华裔美国作家，谭恩美对华裔美国文学做出了巨大贡献。她的第一部小说《喜福会》是她最成功的作品，自出版之日就引起了普通读者和评论家的广泛关注。本文从跨文化角度对谭恩美的小说《喜福会》中的矛盾冲突进行了分析。小说中的中国母亲和美国化的女儿们的矛盾冲突正是两种文化的冲突。本文重在探讨第一代中国移民和她们的后代如何对待中国传统文化和美国文化的差异，以及她们如何解决矛盾。
本论文分为四章。第一章简要介绍谭恩美和《喜福会》、国内外有关这部作品的研究现状。第二章是论文的核心，主要分析小说《喜福会》中的文化冲突。从中西文化冲突的表现和原因两个方面，对于小说中的四对母女冲突做了详细的表述。第三章是分析母女冲突的原因，这种冲突不仅是由 于母女之间存在代沟，更重要的还是由于中西文化不同的特点造成的。论文最后分析了跨文化交际在小说主题中的体现，要在继承母文化的基础上吸收新文化,才能真正做到文化的融合。
