Abstract: Emily Bronte depicts Gothic love and desolate landscapes in the book of Wuthering Heights. Symbolism is used as one of the most important devices in modern fiction. With the application of Symbolism in Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte depicts the human nature altered from distortion to restoration. This thesis attempts to explore the functions of symbolism in Wuthering Heights through the analysis of characters, settings and images so as to reveal the competition between nature force and culture force. This thesis aims to manifest that human beings are on the way to civilization with the possibility of reverse.

摘要:艾米莉•勃朗特在《呼啸山庄》中展现了哥特爱情和荒原情结。象征主义是现代小说中一种重要的创作手法,艾米莉•勃朗特在《呼啸山庄》中大量运用象征主义的手法描绘人性从扭曲到复苏这一心路历程。本文试图探索象征主义在《呼啸山庄》中的作用,通过分析小说中具有不同象征意义的人物、场景、自然意象、文化意象,从而向人们展示自然与文明两种力量的较量,显示了人类在走向文明的同时存在着倒退的逆流。
