Abstract:“The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, first published in Esquire magazine in 1936, is one of Hemingway’s best short stories. The story centers on the memories of a writer named Harry who is on safari in Africa. He has developed an infected wound from a thorn puncture, and lies awaiting his slow death. The short story is the author’s philosophical contemplation about death and immortality, and his warning of the threat to lose artistic integrity to the American writers. Ever since its publication, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” has consistently enjoyed popular acclaim and scholarly attention.
Many critics have analyzed the metaphors in “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. However, metaphor is not a mode of language, but a mode of thought. Based on the theory of George Lakoff, the paper will use conceptual metaphors, a method of Cognitive stylistics, to interpret the metaphorical expressions in“The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, thus providing a new perspective to understand this text.
The thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to the author Hemingway and his story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. The second chapter clarifies the origin, definition, and classification of conceptual metaphors. The third chapter discusses the conceptual metaphors in the title and those about Harry’s death, emotion and life. The last chapter is the conclusion.
