Abstract:Hypotaxis and parataxis are the two concepts which are put forward by Mr. Wang Li in the book Chinese Grammar Theory. English is a hypotaxis-prominent language while Chinese is parataxis-prominent. Chinglish refers to spoken or written English that is influenced by Chinese language and is commonly applied to ungrammatical or nonsensical English in Chinese in Chinese contexts, and may have pejorative or deprecating connotations. Therefore, this thesis, which is an attempt to study Chinglish in C-E translation, analyzes main forms and causes of Chinglish and also proposes ways how to reduce or avoid it with a view to bringing translation nearer to a higher standard, i.e, “faithfulness, smoothness and elegance”.
This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces Chinglish, hypotaxis and parataxis, the structure of the thesis. The second chapter analyzes the previous study on the relevant subject both at home and abroad. Chapter three analyzes the causes of Chinglish and put forward solutions to Chinglish from the perspective of hypotaxis and parataxis. Chapter Four summarizes this thesis and points out the limitations and suggestions for improvement of this thesis.
