Abstract:Idioms are the quintessence of a language. As the carrier of culture, language’s figures of speech and the techniques of expression are embodied perfectly by idioms. Idioms are the concentrated reflection of a nation’s history, social customs, religious beliefs, the state of mind and historical development. As a result, idioms couldn’t be without culture. English idioms are helpful for English learners to know the culture of English speaking countries since idioms originate out of that culture. Therefore, the analysis of English idioms from their origins is really helpful for the deeper understanding of English idioms, which can promote the cross-cultural exchange. The thesis first probes the different origins of English idioms, then, through analyzing examples based on religious idioms we can learn the classification of religious idioms in Bible and their application in different aspects. The first part of the thesis is to show the different origins of English idioms. At the mean time, this part will show how important religion is to English idioms. It is conducive for learners to understand the background of English idioms. The second part of the thesis is mainly about the classification of English idioms. Idioms, which reflect all kinds of aspects of cultural life, are the most sensitive part in the development and changes of culture, and they cover a great deal of grounds. As a result, they can be used in many ways. The third part of the thesis makes an analysis about their application. The forth part will make an analysis about different applications of English idioms through looking on their different aspects. Then, from the applications, we can find the importance of the origin of religion to English idioms and this will be the conclusion part.

中文摘要: 语言是文化的载体，习语是语言的重要组成部分。习语集中地体现出语言的修辞手法和表现手法。习语在一定程度上反映着特定地域，特定历史时期特定民族所特有的文化。所以在文化交流中，它能全面，直接地反映两个民族之间的文化差异。经过人们的长期引用，习语往往渗透着浓郁的民族文化气息，反映本民族的文化特征。习语作为语言的特殊组成部分，它体现着英语语言的特点，英语民族的思维方式以及社会文化的差异。它像一面镜子，从中可以透视一个民族的生活习俗，宗教信仰，心理状态和历史发展。研究习语的来源可以更好的理解习语的本身，将有助于加深对英汉习语的理解，从而更好地进行跨文化的交流。 本论文旨在从文化的角度，首先探索了英语习语的定义及其各种不同的来源，然后从圣经中宗教习语的角度深度探讨宗教对英语习语的影响以及宗教习语的应用。论文第一章主要是从文化上来看英语习语的各种来源并重点介绍宗教对习语的重要影响。不同的民族孕育了不同的语言，不同的语言又孕育出了不同的习语，而不同的习语也有着不同的来源依据。因此，对英语习语来源的学习有利于我们对英语习语有更好的理解。论文的第二章就主要说明了宗教习语的各种分类，体现出宗教习语对英语习语的形成的重要影响。宗教习语的研究对学习和掌握习语方面发挥着重要作用。习语是民族文化发展和变化中最为敏感的部分，社会文化生活中的每一个侧面都会反映到习语中来。英语习语内容涉及的范围很广，所以它的应用也是很广泛的。论文的第三章就此内容进行了一定的探讨。本章从宗教习语的不同方向的应用来探讨宗教这个习语来源对习语的重要性。
