Abstract: This study analyzes cultural conflicts and integration in Amy Tan’s two novels, The Joy Lucky Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. After a brief introduction to Amy Tan and her works, the thesis first summarizes Hofstede’s theory of Individualism-Collectivism and Edward Hall’s theory of High-context and Low-context cultures, which lays the foundation for the study. After that, the thesis analyzes the cultural conflicts in the two novels from four perspectives: language styles, concepts of family, concepts of education and values. Then the author elaborates on reason for the cultural integration: the love between mothers and daughters, and their respective changes. The thesis finally draws the conclusion that the conflicts and integration between Chinese and American cultures, reflected in the relationship between mothers and daughters, prove that only if people keep communicating and respecting the uniqueness of Chinese culture and American culture, cultural integration can be realized.
