Abstract:National spirit is a nation’s spiritual support of survival and development. Without inspiring spirit and lofty character, the nationality can not stand on the world community. Without the spirit, a country will never be prosperous. American spirit is the most outstanding national spirit of the United States. It makes great promotional effects and far-reaching consequences.
Since the foundation of the United States to the 21st century, almost every president advocated American spirit in his inaugural address. There is no exception for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. The age of Roosevelt is one of the most difficult and influential periods in American history. Forced by significant changes of history, Roosevelt called for American spirit in his four inaugural addresses. In the first inaugural address, he mainly called for the spirit of braveness and confidence and the spirit of pragmatism. In the second and third inaugural addresses, he emphasized on and called for the spirit of democracy again and again. In the fourth inaugural address, he called for the spirit of internationalism. This paper makes a systematical discussion on the history of the American spirit which are mentioned above, focuses on analyzing the reasons of Roosevelt’s calling for the American spirit and the American spirit’s far-reaching consequences on America from three dimensions time, value and subject.

摘 要:民族精神是一个民族赖以生存和发展的精神支撑。一个民族，没有振奋的精神, 就不可能自立于世界民族之林。一个国家，没有了这种精神，就不会繁荣昌盛。美国精神是美国最显著的民族精神。它对美国政治、经济、文化的发展具有重大的推动作用和深远影响。
从美国建国到21世纪的今天，几乎每任美国总统都在其就职演说中提倡美国精神，美国第三十二届总统富兰克林德拉诺罗斯福也不例外。罗斯福时代是美国历史上最艰难也是最具影响的时期之一。迫于历史的巨变，罗斯福在他的四次就职演说中都提倡了美国精神。在第一次就职演说中，他主要提倡勇敢自信精神和实用主义精神。在第二次和第三次就职演说中，他反复强调并提倡民主精神。在第四次就职演说中，他又提倡国际主义精神。本文就上述美国精神的历史进行了系统的论述，着重从时间、价值、主体三维角度分析了罗斯福总统提倡这几种美国精神的原因所在及其对美国所产生的深远影响。
