Abstract:Holden Caulfield is the protagonist of the novel The Catcher in the Rye, which is the American famous writer Jerome David Salinger’s novel, and Holden mentions his dream many times. This thesis uses related grounds of argument of some critics and scholars to show that Holden is a teenager full of love, but he lives in a phony world without warmth and love. The hypocrisy and affectation of the adult society lead to his loneliness and failure. It analyzes further the process of catching and disillusion of his dream, including the immaturity of mind, the longing for understanding and the seeking without result. The thesis aims at revealing further the unreality of his dream and the necessity of disillusion. All reflect Holden’s depressed spiritual home, and his resisting and frustration for the ugly reality.
