Abstract: This paper concentrates on the application of expressionistic techniques in The Hairy Ape by Eugene O’Neill, the representative figure of modern drama. The first part is a brief account of the author and the play, the literature review of both expressionism and The Hairy Ape. The second part is an elaboration of the application of expressionistic techniques: symbols, inner monologues, sound and visual effects, and mask. The third part focuses on the significance of the expressionistic techniques. The last part arrives at the conclusion that the expressionistic techniques not only presents a vivid picture of the protagonist’s psychological activities but also highlights the theme of alienation suffered by modern people.

摘要：本文阐述现代戏剧的代表人物—尤金·奥尼尔《毛猿》中的表现主义手法。第一部分是对作者，作品及表现主义和《毛猿》的简单概述。第二部分对表现主要手法：象征，内心独白，音响视觉效果和面具进行仔细分析。第三部分着眼于表现主要手法的意义。最后做出总结：表现主要手法的运用不仅生动展示主人公的内心活动，而且突出了现代人的异化主题。
