Abstract: Mark Twain, a famous American novelist, journalist, and satirist, is famous for his skills of using humor and irony. In order to portray a series of people from the lower class to the upper class in his works vividly, he creates his novels with the rhetorical devices: irony and humor, which helps readers clearly realize the ugliness and apathy of the society, as well as the indifference and coldness of the relationship among people. The paper aims to take the Adventures of Tom Sawyer as an example to study and interpret the relationship between portraying characters and constructing themes with the rhetorical devices: irony and humor by Mark Twain.

摘要：马克吐温是美国著名的小说家、记者和讽刺家,其作品多以幽默和辛辣著称。在其作品中，马克吐温为了栩栩如生地塑造一系列从下层百姓到上层社会的各色人等，将幽默和讽刺的写作手法融进了小说的创作之中，这有助于读者清醒认清社会的丑陋与冷漠，人情的冷暖和炎凉。本文旨在以《汤姆索亚历险记》这本小说为例，研究和阐释马克吐温的讽刺与幽默手法在人物塑造、和与主题建构之间的关系。
