Abstract: The Dead, the final story in James Joyce’s Dubliners, serves the same purpose as the other 14 ones of awakening the morally paralytic Irish during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This thesis will represent the moral paralysis in The Dead through analyzing the inertia of the Characters, incapability of communication, and disillusion of love, thus to reproduce the authentic Dublin life depicted by the author.

摘要:《死者》是詹姆斯·乔伊斯短篇小说集《都柏林人》的压轴之作。跟其余十四篇一样,该小说旨在唤醒19世纪末20世纪初精神瘫痪的爱尔兰人。本文将通过分析该作品中缺乏活力的人物形象,社交中的交流障碍以及爱情的幻灭来呈现《死者》精神瘫痪的主题及其现实意义,再现乔伊斯刻画的真实的都柏林生活。
