Abstract:Daphne Du Maurier is famous for her novel Rebecca. It mainly tells a story that a young woman got through a series of strange and horrible events in Manderley after her marriage. At the same time she witnessed Manderley from its flourishing to extermination. Based on the theory of Female Gothic, this article will analyze the Female Gothic images in the novel and discuss the function of these images in presenting the theme, i.e. women’s fight against patriarchy society.
The thesis falls into five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction. Chapter two introduces the theory of Female Gothic. Chapter three is to dig out the images of Female Gothic hidden in Rebecca, and Chapter four is to explore reasons for Du Maurier’s feminist attitudes. Chapter five is the conclusion.
