Abstract:As a universal social and cultural phenomenon, Taboo is reflected in all aspects of social life. As a language variant, Taboo also has its own nationality. Taboo reflects a nation’s history, traditional ideas, customs and etiquette, religion belief, morality, values and social psychological characteristics. The author comparatively analyzes the similarities and differences between Chinese and English Taboos. In this way, it states the cultural connotation of taboos and offers some strategies on avoiding using taboos. This paper aims to helping readers understand the cultural backgrounds of Chinese and English taboos, reduce cultural conflicts and embarrassment in intercultural communication and improve pragmatic competence of English learners.
