Abstract:Metaphor is an important way for people to perform mentality, which can help people recognize and understand the entire world. Metaphor is a way in which people understand one new kind of thing through the other things. Many writers use metaphor in their works to describe the characters, background and emotions and so on. Cognitive metaphor appeared repeatedly in literary works. And it helps writers deepen the theme and also helps the readers understand the work better.
There are many scholars analyzing the work, Tess of the D’Urbervilles. However, they just focus on the causes of the tragedy of Tess. Thomas Hardy is fluent in using metaphor and using many cognitive metaphors to highlight the tragedy of Tess and her personality. So this paper studies the cognitive study in the novel ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, especially the analysis of metaphor of color, home, name and animal. It is able to help readers understand the theme of the novel and the cognitive function of cognitive metaphor.
