Abstract:The relevant books and articles about the research on the theme about A Passage to India is beyond count, and it has also been a focus of academic research. Domestic and foreign scholars has been studying the themes from different aspects. In recent years, with the increasing number of research materials and the number of subjects, domestic and international academic research and understanding of this topic is also deepening. Based on the existing research results, this paper makes a further explanation to this problem. Forster, as a novelist, has played an important role in modern English literature as well as in the world of English literature. To study the theme of A Passage to India is of great significance to the development of the spirit of humanism and the spirit of universal love. A Passage to India is the most prestigious work in his novels, written in his own personal experiences and feelings in India. As a representative of Forster, the novel has been concerned and studied by scholars. As the author is a writer from the realistic to the modern transition period, his works contain the factors of realism and modernism. On the basis of the existing works, this paper studies the themes. Proceed from the two aspects of realism and modernism, it reveal the theme of the novel from the outside to the inside so that readers can deepen the understanding of the theme of the novel and the background of the times, and the author and his thoughts, and inspire readers to think more about Forster and his works. The combination of realism and modernism reflects the social reality, showing the author's sympathy for the Indians and the hatred to the British, and the hope for the future of the British and Indian people in the future.
