Abstract:George Eliot is a famous female writer in England, and is a behalf of freedom of thought in Victoria era. Her works produce the great effect in that time. Especially, she dares to challenge the authority of the secular, and have courage to pursue freedom and the life what she wants.
The paper pointed into the heroine’s character and her not succeed love, and according it to analysis the view of marriage of the author. And focus on discussing the feminism in Victoria era. Based on it, probing into the feeling, conscious and view of marriage of Maggie. There are four parts. The first part introduces the novel and the author to understand the author’s background and the purpose of writing. The second part analyses the understanding of marriage of Eliot, and the propotype of Maggie in the real society and the effect of feminism. The last part is conclusion and personal feelings.
In the Floss on the Mill, Eliot through to describe Maggie to express her complaints of the woman status is low, and the pursuit of freedom and marriage.
