Abstract
With the increasing requirement of students who have both professional knowledge and skilled English, the Chinese Ministry of Education published the document about promoting the bilingual education in universities and colleges. Bilingual education is a kind of teaching method that using two languages to facilitate learning by students who have a native proficiency in one language and are acquiring another. Many universities and colleges took the first step to establish bilingual courses. However, bilingual education is a complicated project involving teaching contents, teaching modes, course setting, teachers’ training, teaching materials, teaching management and teaching evaluations. The results by now have not been achieved as expected.
The thesis begins with the explanation of the basic theories of bilingual education, including the concepts, the types and the modes; explores the foundation of bilingual education from the view of linguistics and psychology. Then analyses the actualities of bilingual education in science majors in Chinese universities and colleges by investigating the practice in Hangzhou Normal University, Chemistry School and Medicine School, sums up the existing diversities and problems of bilingual education. Finally discuss the countermeasures, attempting to solve the problems.
