Abstract
“A Rose for Emily” is the written by William Faulkner. This novel reflects the changes in the south of America after the civil war. As a descendant of the Southern aristocratic family, Emily is cool and arrogant. After her father’s death, she fell in love with Homer who came to the town to build railway. When she found Homer did not mean to start a family with her, she poisoned him with arsenic. Several factors make up Emily’s tragic life such as social background, family life and her own personality. And the dissertation will deeply analyze the reasons from the above factors.
