Abstract

 

Task-based Approach (TBA) is one of the communicative teaching methods used in English teaching. TBA is recognized throughout the world and is particularly useful to foreign language teaching. Task-based Approach is a process in which teachers provide students the context and opportunities of language learning, and instruct the students to learn language through completing set tasks; this ensures students are actively engaged in learning. So as to provide a reference for primary school oral English teaching and enhance students’ English communicative competence, this thesis is aimed at analyzing the present situation of oral English teaching in China, factors that hinder the development of oral English teaching, exploring how the full potential of TBA can be optimally used to oral English teaching in primary school (the advantages of its application to English teaching in a primary school setting, the conditions required by TBA and the principles of the design of tasks), as well as the case analysis of task-based oral English teaching in primary school. The basic idea of TBA is deeply implemented into the teaching process in this research. Teachers design tasks, following the seven principles of TBA, as well as regarding students’ life experience and interests as the starting point. The stages of task-based oral English teaching includes: pre-task stage, during-task stage, post-task stage, evaluation stage. Not only can this stimulate the students’ active thinking ability, problem-solving ability and moderate tension of completing tasks, but also can improve students’ speaking ability and their spirit of cooperation.
