Abstract
The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Alexander Dumas during the boom period of Romanticism in France, is one of the best sellers in the 19th century. The Count of Monte Cristo Dumas created in his novel fully acts out the core spirit of Romanticism-brave imagination and free mind, making it the symbolic character in Romanticism literature. On the basis of previous studies, combining with the time background, this thesis interpreted The Count of Monte Cristo from characters, characteristics of the main characters and the process of the protagonist’s pursuit of his lifelong goal—revenge in the perspective of Romanticism. The study also analyzed the educational meaning on readers of the work and its profound historical and realistic significance of Romanticism.
