Abstract

In recent years, the study of Mrs. Gaskell's has begun to get a new breakthrough, no longer as simple as it was before. More and more studies on Mrs. Gaskell's are being done by using social theories, women consciousness, religious ideas and so on rather than just using the concept of class contradictions and struggles in Marxism to interpret Mrs. Gaskell work. With the development of economy and the continuous improvement of the status of women, the feminism has gradually become a social hot spot. Mrs. Gaskell was a pioneer of feminism, but there are few studies on her works in which feminism was prevailing. North and South is such a work that should be studied in order to know about feminism. This study has an analysis of the character Margaret in North and South from the perspective of feminism. Firstly, there is a review of previous research on North and South. Secondly, the development of feminism is introduced. Then the living background where Margaret lived, the family tragedies she suffered from and her own growth experience are introduced, and finally, how Margret grown up as the representative of New woman. The study finds that Margaret was a witty and brave woman, the good dispositions of whom are still worth being learned by the women of our time who want to keep up with times and strive to improve their accomplishment.
