Abstract
In Tess of the D 'Urberville,Hardy uses symbolism to describe the environment around characters, providing the necessary background for the development of plot. Also, the environment links to the fate of the leading character, Tess. Tess’s fate is changing along with her surroundings. In this passage, the environmental description is divided into natural environment and social environment. In the natural environment, I analyze the animals, plants and natural scenery. In the social environment, I analyze the D’urbervilles family, the church appearing in the books many times and Stonehenge Tess stays before she is taken away.
