Abstract: With globalization, translation plays an increasingly important role in cultural exchanges between different nations. But for a long time, the quality of translation is judged with reference to its faithfulness and equivalence to the original work. The translator and his subjectivity have long been neglected. In the 1970s, the “cultural turn” in the west brought a new dimension in translation studies, which go beyond the pure linguistic level. This thesis, by making a comparative study between Xu Yuanchong’s translation works and those of Stephen Owen, is to illustrate that the translator’s subjectivity plays an important role in bringing out the meaning, rhyme and form of the ancient Chinese poetry. Hope the conclusion of this thesis can serve as a kind of reference to the translation of Tang Poetry.

Key words: translator’s subjectivity; Tang Poetry; translating thoughts
