Abstract:American author J.D Salinger’s masterpiece Catcher in the Rye portrays the protagonist Holden’s three-days vagabondage life in New York after he was dismissed from school.Though the book was full of dirty words and misconducts of teenagers,it was still one of the American classic novels. The significance of the book not only lies in word processing skills, but also in its social meaning. It used Caulfield’s life experiences and psychological changes to reflect the post-war condition of America and the living condition of average American people in that situation. The most vital thing of the novel is use Caulfield as a representative to reflect the contemporary teenagers’ inner contradiction, revolt and growth. Those era significance made the book live through time’s test and still remained as a bestseller. This thesis studies the era meaning of this book by studying the life and psychology pf Caulfield.
