Abstract: This paper analyzes the novel— The Old Man and the Sea. In the first, the second and the third chapters of the paper, I analyze the “tough guy” image of Santiago respectively in three aspects: words and action, spirit and body, appearance and character. In a word, this novel delivers us great spiritual shock. Behind Santiago are the eternal confidence, self-esteem and self-improvement. One can be destroyed but not defeated.
