Abstract
Gone with the Wind is the most famous work of Margaret Mitchell, who is considered as an extraordinary woman novelist. Both literary critics and the readers have taken great interest in its unconventional heroine Scarlett O’Hara, whose unconventionality is shown in her personality of indomitability and independence. The image of Scarlett is brilliant for her rebellious character. She always insists on her principle to rebel and fight bravely against the seemingly predetermined life. This thesis mainly focuses on the feminist ideas in Scarlett’s contending for destiny, including her fight against the feudal ethics and the terrible natural environment. Also, it gives a brief introduction of the influence of Scarlett’s fighting spirit on modern women, which will enable people to draw inspiration from Scarlett’s awakening of feminism and prove Scarlett is increasingly maturing and in the end becomes a new Southern woman with perseverance.
