Abstract
Vocabulary is one of the three language elements. The size of vocabulary directly influences the development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Therefore, the accumulation of vocabulary is of vital importance for student’s English study. Today, many junior middle school students in China come across various problems while learning vocabulary, which result in the low efficiency of vocabulary learning. This thesis discusses the current situation of vocabulary teaching by analyzing some typical problems of vocabulary learning. Focused on the importance of students’ motivation and interest as well as the basic vocabulary knowledge and principles in the course of vocabulary learning, it also offers some effective suggestions, among which the most practical two are context-based approach and lexical approach.
