Abstract
Indian film Three Idiots was one of the most favorite films among the Indians in 2009. The film, unfolding in the process of two good friends who are looking for their companion, tells about how three students majoring in Engineering, named Rancho, Farhan and Raju, pursue their dreams. The story begins with a flashback. It contains plenty of ups and downs. The film combines elements of mystery, satire, and comedy. This paper first illustrates the social problems of India in this film from four aspects: malpractices of the traditional education in India, vestiges of hierarchy, high suicide rates and the inferior social status of female. Then the social and cultural causes are explored to provide explanations for the social problems discussed above. It is hoped that this paper would help people have a profound understanding of Indian society and culture.
