ABSTRACT

 

The emergence of linguistic imperialism has profound historical roots and realistic basis. Language imperialist phenomenon is particularly prominent in today's society, and thus subject to the attention of many experts and scholars. 

The 21st century is a new colonial society, owing to the rapid development of science, technology and education, the ELT replace the old way of naked exploitation. In China, the history of the establishment of the hegemony of English language teaching has gradually evolved into the linguistic imperialism in education. This study focuses on exploring the linguistic imperialism embodied in ELT in China and its impact on ELT. 

This paper absorbs some reasonable theories of criticism linguistics to explore the influence of linguistic imperialism (especially on education) on China through the current situation of ELT in China, so as to make recommendations for China's English teaching.
