ABSTRACT
This paper mainly discusses the feasibility and possibility of applying contrast between English and Chinese to college English teaching by analyzing the effects of the native tongue on the second language learning. The research conducted on contrastive analysis previously and the comparison of phonology, lexicon and syntax between English and Chinese show that language transfer exists in the second language acquisition and has great effect on it. The current situation of college English instruction in China and the evidence from empirical studies also demonstrate that contrastive analysis can be employed in teaching college English so as to improve Chinese learners’ receptive and productive use of English.
