Abstract: Byron is one of most outstanding representatives of the British Romanticism. His masterpiece Don Juan is the culmination of romantic poetry. Don Juan bears a clear autobiographic feature. Using Don Juan as the text, this thesis summarizes Byron's ambivalent attitude towards female through the analysis of his depiction of women characters. The thesis firstly introduces Byron and Don Juan, then analyzes a few female images in the epic through which Byron's views on female are reflected. Although Byron disrespected, objectified and criticized his women characters in the epic, he also showed his sympathy and admiration for female. In the end, the paper clarifies the causes of his views on female in Don Juan combining with familial background, social context and emotional experiences to enable the readers to understand the social background of Byron and Don Juan.
